Sermon Notes - Taking Jesus at His Word (Total Trust in God)!

Taking Jesus at His Word

(Total Trust in God)!

Key Preaching Verses

Luke 18.16-17:  But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’

Focus Questions

  • What sort of behaviours would you expect to find in a spiritually journeying Christian who has put their total trust in God?
  • How profound is your trust in God?  Does your behaviour reflect your trust in God’s grace or is your trust in God more theory than practice?
  • In today’s Gospel reading from St Luke, Jesus tries to raise the social conscience of His hearers, by encouraging them to share their wealth with the poor.  Do you take Jesus at His word and trust that God will look after you, which frees you to give generously to the poor?  (Hint: See Luke 12.16-21 and 24)
  • Giving generously to the marginalised and poor involves more than just giving of money since it also involves being inclusive in our thinking and behaviour!  For example, do you exercise the unconditional and inclusive love of Jesus towards boat people, gays and lesbians and muslims or are you into judgement and stereotypes?
  • Why is it “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God”? (Luke 18.25)
