Sermon Notes - A Faith Filled Life (Don’t Forget the Mustard)!

A Faith Filled Life

(Don’t Forget the Mustard)!

Key Preaching Verses

a)  2 Timothy 1.8-9a:  Timothy’s commission for mission, “So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.  He has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.”

b)  Luke 17.5-6:  “The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ 6 He replied, ‘If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it will obey you.’”

Focus Questions

  • What is Christian faith?
  • Is there a difference between being faithful to God and being religious?
  • How does faith grow in us? (Hint: To answer this question you need a good understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit!)
  • How do we release the power of the Holy Spirit into our lives?
  • How do we encourage faith in others?
  • How can Christian faith lead us to personal transformation and conversion?
  • How much faith is enough?
  • Imagine that a tiny mustard seed of faith has been entrusted to you!  Will you accept and use this gift of God’s grace for the building of the kingdom of God in your own family and beyond into the community of Strathpine?  How are you doing this?
  • In the last few weeks I have been talking about stewardship as a whole of life activity! What is the relationship between faith and stewardship?

Take Home Challenge

One day Michelangelo attracted a crowd to watch him work.  One child in particular was fascinated by the flying chips of stone.  Michelangelo was shaping a large block of white marble.  Unable to contain her curiosity she asked, “What are you making?”

He replied, “There is an angel in there and I must set it free.”

Similarly, there is an angel inside of us and we need to set it free.  To release the Christian inside of us we don’t need more faith but rather simply to use the little faith that we have and put it into action!

In the beginning of the sermon I told a story about a man who cried out to God to help him change.  He said, “Please God make me like Bill!”

  • I Wonder how many people look at us and cry out to God they want to be like us?
  • Do the people we meet see the work of Jesus in our lives?
  • Do we exercise our mustard seed faith by changing the world, through one good word or act at a time?
