Sermon Notes - The Dangers of Christian Discipleship

The Dangers of Christian Discipleship

(The Cost of being an Apostle of Jesus Christ)!

Key Preaching Verse

Luke 14.26:  Jesus said, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple.”

Focus Questions

  • Carefully read today’s Key Preaching Verse.  What is going on here?  Is Jesus a religious extremist?  Why did Jesus use that offensive word “hate”?  Do you find Jesus’ statement in today’s Gospel reading offensive?
  • How do you explain today’s Gospel reading?  Do you   understand the use of hyperbole (exaggerated language) by teachers in the Middle East when emphasising an important point in their teaching?
  • What is the teaching Jesus is trying to convey to His hearers?
  • What is the true cost of being an Apostle of Jesus Christ?
  • Is there anything more pathetic than a Christian (so  called) who hasn’t counted the cost of discipleship and gives up easily because of the demands that Christian Ministry makes on our lives?

Take Home Challenge

  • Let me ask you:  If every person who attends worship at Faith Community Anglican Church Strathpine, supported the Church just as much as you do, what kind of Church would we have?ₒₒₒ
  • Christians often call Christ Lord!  But what is Jesus Lord of? (Note: If Jesus is not Lord and Master of our personal lives our families and our church, then calling Jesus Lord is just a meaningless title!)ₒₒₒ
  • The danger of discipleship is simply this: it changes you and keeps on changing you! ₒₒₒ
