Sermon Notes - Jesus’ Master Class on Prayer!

Theme:  Jesus’ Master Class on Prayer!

Key Preaching Verses

Luke 11.1“One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’”

Focus Questions

  • How should we pray?  What have you learnt from Jesus’ master class on prayer in today’s Gospel reading?  What is prayer?  What are the different aspects of prayer that you enjoy?
  • Why do we Christians pray?  (Hint: Think about the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our world.  In particular, I recommend that you read Romans 8!)
  • When should we pray?  In our spiritual discipline should we put a special time aside each day to be with God in prayer or should we simply pray throughout the day?  Or maybe both?  What works for you?  (Hint: I believe our prayer life speaks volumes about our Christian maturity!)
  • Is it possible to be a non praying Christian?  If our lives don’t include prayer, what is it that we are missing out on?
  • Do you pray that God’s will be done or your will be done?  In other words is your prayer God-centred or self-centred?
  • Do you pray before you act? (Hint: This opens up the whole question on how to be a powerful and effective Christian.  I believe nothing lasting can be achieved for the kingdom of God without pray.  What do you think? (See Psalm 127.1)

Take Home Challenge

Christians pray to bring their lives into harmony with the prayer of the Holy Spirit that is being prayed inside each and every one of us... (See Romans 8)

  1. Jesus prayed regularly and so should we.
  2. Jesus prayed faithfully (and not selfishly) and so should we.

<>3.Jesus prayed confidently and with trust and so should we.
