Sermon Notes - Fact or Fiction?

Theme: Resurrection – Fact or Fiction?

(How to be an Easter Person)!

Key Preaching Verses

Luke 24.10-12:  “It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.  But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.  Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.”

Focus Questions

Celebrating Easter is about changing our understanding from the expected to the unexpected!

  • Do you believe in Resurrection?  Why?
  • When Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James and other women told the disciples about their personal experiences of the Empty Tomb. the disciples did not believe them.  They decided that the women’s reports of Christ’s resurrection from the dead were absolute nonsense!  Why do you think the disciples rejected the women’s stories about the resurrection of Christ?
  • I note that the women having personally experienced the Empty Tomb cannot keep the Good News to themselves.  Do the people you work with know you are a Christian?  Do your friends know?  Do you tell the story of Christ’s resurrection from the dead to your children and grandchildren?  Do you pray for and with your family?  If not, why not?

Take Home Challenge:

  • It has been said to me by people who do not believe in life after death, “no one has come back from the grave to prove it!”  Isn’t this the whole point of Easter?  That someone has come back from the grave to prove it!
  • IIf the Gospel Easter stories tell us anything.  It is that God does the unexpected.  Don’t try to confine God to human notions of what seems like common sense.  Break out from what seems reasonable.  Jesus rose from the dead!
