Sermon Notes - The Tragedy of Rejection

Theme: The Tragedy of Rejection

(Jesus is rejected by the people of Nazereth because He is Catholic)!

Key Preaching Verses

1 Corinthians 13.13:  St Paul said, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

2. Luke 4.28-30:  “All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.  They got up, drove Him out of the town, and took Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him off the cliff.  But He walked right through the crowd and went on His way.”

Focus Questions

·        Why was Jesus rejected by His own people , in His home town, where He had been raised since He was a child?

·        When Jesus preached His first sermon, the people of His Church became so angry with Him that they wanted to murder Him!  Why?

·        How does love prepare us for God and how does God prepare us for love?  (Hint: Read 1 Corinthians 13.1-13)

·        Have you ever been criticised, gossiped about and rejected for witnessing your Christian Faith?  How did you respond?  Did you give up and cower away like a beaten dog?  Or were you courageous in the witness of your Christian faith? (note:  It is better to have cowered away like a beaten dog than to have never stood up for our Lord!  What do you think?!)

Take Home Challenge:

·        I said in today’s Theme, that Jesus was rejected and almost murdered by the religious people of the Nazareth synagogue for being too catholic?  What does catholic mean?  Are you catholic in the exercise of your God ministry?

·        St Paul says in his first letter to the Church of Corinth that some Christians are called to the specialist ministry of prophecies. (Hint: See last week’s New Testament reading     1 Corinthians 12.12-31)  This is absolutely true.  But in a general sense all Christians are called to be prophetic in the way they speak and live God’s Word.  I note that it takes genuine courage to be a prophet of God!  What is a prophet?  Do you have a prophet’s courage?  Are you courageous and contagious in the exercise of your God ministry?
