Sermon Notes - Jesus' First Sermon

Key Preaching Verses

1 Corinthians 12.27-31: “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.  And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?  Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?  Now eagerly desire the greater gifts.

2. Luke 4.18-19:  Jesus said in His sermon, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

Focus Questions

·        How would you expect a person to behave who is filled with the Spirit of God?

·        In what ways has the Spirit of God chosen you to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to captives, recovery of sight for the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour?

·        In other words, as a Holy Spirit filled Christian, what is your God-given ministry in the Anglican Church of Strathpine?

If you want to know how a Holy Spirit-filled person might behave, then we need not look any further than our Lord and Master Jesus Christ.  In Jesus we have the most Spirit-filled person of all time.  For example, at the baptism of Jesus “the Holy Spirit came down upon him in bodily form like a dove.” (Luke 3:22)  After His baptism, “Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit into the desert.” (Luke 4:1)

What is most interesting is that Jesus having had these Spirit-filled experiences preaches His first sermon in the synagogue at Nazareth.  He began His sermon by reading from the prophet Isaiah 61:1-2.  In this sermon Jesus speaks about the Spirit of the Lord being upon Him and consequently what are the practical behaviours of a Spirit-filled person, namely to declare good news to the poor, release for prisoners, sight for the blind, liberty for the oppressed and a message that the year of God’s favour has dawned.  Therefore it is reasonable to suggest that we can observe the behaviours of a Holy Spirit-filled person through their God-given ministries.
